"Who am i?"
If you don't know who I am, here's my story:
I was a very shy child... so shy in fact that I used to take F-grades when asked to speak in front of my classes. My parents tried to put me in a lot of activities, and there were none I could stick to; in fact, I enjoyed baseball, but even that grew old quick.
So if you know a child like that... well, you sort of know who I was.
Why I'll Always Thank My Parents!
My mother found Master William Johns back in 1988 and enrolled me in classes for my 13th birthday gift. I thought karate was cool, but I was still reluctant to have to talk to new people. I took my first class and really enjoyed myself, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to come back.
That didn't really matter though, because my Mom and Master Johns had already decided that I was coming back. Master Johns reminded her that if I was going to succeed at anything in life, I'd have to learn commitment, and that number one, that was a lesson that had to come from my parents, which they agreed because that's the way they were raised too.
The Beginning Of A New Me... Like It Could Be... For You Or Your Family!
I enjoyed it so much that when I became a red belt (which takes about 2 years) Master Johns asked me to warm-up and eventually teach my first class... thinking back at my earlier days and HATING to speak in front of my school classes, I was terrified at this thought!
Now, here I am, as an adult, I have done the hard work and learned the habits necessary to be ranked a "master" of my personal practice of the arts by organizational standards of excellence and further to be noted a "master level instructor" in my teaching of others.

If someone told me back then that my shy self was going to own two schools and one day teach in front of tons of families, I would have laughed at them, and looked in the mirror and said, "no, I could never."
It was because my parents did something great by choosing the right instructor for me, early in life.

'I Was Worried That People Would Laugh At Me, Or That I Would Feel Dumb. Neither Happened.'
The first few classes, I was really worried that people would laugh at me, or that I would feel dumb. Neither happened. I enjoyed the training so much that I never felt dumb at all, even when I consistently moved my right leg when Kyo Sa (title for certified instructor) said left and the left when he said right. I couldn't get my arms to cooperate at all, so every time one should have been up it was down - and down when it should have been up. No one ever laughed. Everyone was concentrating on learning themselves!
I had an additional concern when I began training: I have had arthritis since I was 21 years old. I was worried that it would prevent me from performing, or that I would injure myself. Again neither happened. Since I began training my range of motion is the same as it would be if I didn't have arthritis at all. In fact it is better than many people my age.

I enrolled primarilly because I was seeking to improve and maintain better physical health and fitness. My daughter enolled because she liked the idea of doing martial arts (after watching Mulan I and II many times). My experience at Choong Shim Do Martial Arts Academy has been a wonderful one. I had a lot of questions and concerns before joining, but all my questions have been answered and my concerns relieved.
A couple of weeks afterwards my husband participated in a demonstration. It was then that I got to meet ladies of all ages and ranks from both studios. It impressed me very much to see young midnight belts give a wonderful presentation. What caught my eye the most, though, was the self defense demonstration. In my humble opinion, that is something every woman should learn on this day and age. Last, but not least, martial arts are a great way to relieve the daily stress and to stay in shape.

'I try to hassle my friends to join this school all the time.'
When people think of martial arts, they probably think of Jackie Chan, kung fu movies, black belts, and board breaking. For people who start training, it becomes much deeper than that. I trained martial arts for a few years when I was younger, but it wasn’t until 3 months ago that I started training with the CSD Martial Arts Academy. I’m a very active person, so training martial arts is one way to achieve more flexibility, strength, and coordination. I also enjoy training because it’s not something everyone. Sometimes the instructor will start or end the class with a breathing exercise or a moral. There’s a good atmosphere at the do jang, and the instructors are happy to work with you and build your skills one-on-one. Another thing that I really enjoy about this school is its new Philippine Martial Arts stick fighting class (a.k.a arnis; eskrima) something that I hadn’t seen many schools offer. I recommend martial arts for anyone; I try to hassle my friends to join this school all the time. And for anyone who’s insecure about joining, I can tell you that your weight, age, or shape won’t stop you from being able to train.
